Kampung Tehel Mosque

Located at KM16  in the Ayer Panas district in Bemban, the mosque was originally  merely a wooden Muslim house of prayer.  Later, the local residents  planned to build a new mosque in Ulu Tehel but it failed to materialize due to  several problems.  However, in 1923, construction of the new mosque started, using sago palm roofing.  In 1925, though, there was a slight hitch which required a discussion among Inspector Tuan Haji Ibrahim Mawar, Tuan Haji Khalil, the then Mufti of Melaka State and Tok Mat Haji Kecut.  After some deliberation, the problem was overcome and consequently, the mosque was completed in 1926.  The building materials used were those that were easily available, for example, the use of certain shrubs (‘genting sudu’) for roofing.

The founding of this mosque was due to the joint efforts of Inspector Tuan Haji Ibrahim Mawar, the Village Headman,  Muit bin Baba and a few others.  The construction works were a collaborative effort of the villagers, so was the raising of funds.  The collection of donations ranged from RM10 to RM 50 among the wealthier villagers.  The local residents helped in transporting earth for filling up the land while carving and carpentry works were carried out by the Chinese.  Timber used for the main building pillars was brought in from Siak and Sumatera.  The land for the mosque was bequeathed by Khatijah binti Omar.
