This tomb is believed to be that of Tun Teja Ratna Benggala, the daughter of Seri Amar, the Royal Chief Minister of Pahang (Inderapura). Tun Teja was the wife of Sultan Mahmud Shah who reigned from 1458 to 1511. When Melaka fell to the Portuguese in 1511, he retreated to Bentayan (Muar). It was at this time that Tun Teja, who was seriously ill, passed away. Her remains were interred here with due ceremony.
Tun Teja was not only beautiful and of high integrity but was also a faithful wife cherished by the Sultan. She was totally loyal to the State. Subsequently, she kindled the spirit of heroism among the Malay women to rise up to defend the State against Portuguese aggression. Hence, her deeds and sacrifices will be remembered for posterity.
